Eleven varieties, 38 Gold Medals at Marlborough Wine Show

Marlborough showed its vast strength at this year’s Marlborough Wine Show, with 11 varieties taking out 38 gold medals.

It was Pinot Noir that topped the gold medal table, with a total of 12 awarded. Chief Judge Jack Glover says the high number of golds is a reflection of the wines coming out of 2015, 2016 and 2017.

“They were all very good years for Marlborough Pinot Noir and it showed through in the competition.”

Sauvignon Blanc was the second most awarded variety, with nine golds. Showing the variety is capable of standing the test of age, two of the gold medals went to wines from 2015.

Chardonnay came in third on the gold medal list, with a total of seven wines.

While Marlborough is renowned for Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Marlborough Wine Show highlighted how many other varieties do well in the region.  Pinot Gris, Chenin Blanc, Syrah, Gewurztraminer, Sparkling, Riesling and Rosé also picked up golds.

More than 550 wines were entered in this year’s show, and alongside the 38 gold medals, 87 silvers and 240 bronze medals were awarded.

The Marlborough Wine Show trophies, including Wine of the Show, Legacy Award and the new Provenance Trophy (Single Vineyard)  will be announced on Friday, at a Celebration Long Lunch being held at the ASB Theatre.

Wine Marlborough will also announce the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award to one person who is deemed to have made a substantial contribution to the Marlborough wine industry.

About The Marlborough Wine Show

The Marlborough Wine Show was created and built by Belinda Jackson and Margaret Cresswell in 2011. Last year, Wine Marlborough, the regional winegrower representative body, purchased the show, with the aim of continuing its legacy.

All wines entered must be produced from 95 percent Marlborough grapes, and the show is the only one in New Zealand that judges the wine in Spiegelau varietal specific glassware. The judging panel of nine included three from outside Marlborough; Dr Jamie Goode, Matt Lamb and John Saker.
